WAIT
Wait…Why Am I Talking?
This is one of my favorite tools to provide for my clients, because it is very simple but has proven to be incredibly effective. In working towards living a more mindful and intentional life, one of the more challenging tasks can be learning to identify how you are feeling, and why you might feel that way. Particularly early on in the process, remembering to check in with yourself is tough; we tend to just roll with our emotions as they’re happening. Successful implementation of WAIT involves saying that one word to yourself as soon as you recognize yourself starting to react to something or someone impulsively. Often times, that beat of emotional distance is all it takes to allow your rational thinking to start up again, and you can take a moment to ask yourself why am I talking? What is it that I actually need to express right now? How was I going to say it, and is there a better way to get my point across? Is what I want to say something that needs to be said, or will it exacerbate the situation?
Stay tuned for more tips for mindful living, and let me know if there’s any particular topic you’d like me to cover in a future post!
